    Virgie Cary's (Temple) happy plantation life is shattered when war (The Civil War) breaks out and her dear dad (John Boles) must go fight, while her mother (Karen Morley) falls ill. But nonetheless the irrepressible Virgie manages to meet President Lincoln and tap dance her way into the heart of old Uncle Billy (Robinson).

    Cast: Shirley Temple (Virgie Cary), Bill Robinson (Uncle Billy) and Willie Best (James Henry). 
    Tap Dances include: 1. Tap dance at a children's party, perf. by Robinson. Robinson plays servant to the little darling "How would you all like to see Uncle Billy dance?" she asks the little guests at her formal sit down party. Uncle Billy obliges with a brief fastidious tap dance on parquet wooden floor to "Turkey in the Straw" comprising time steps, crossovers, wings, and running flaps forwards and backwards, all the time grinning and gesturing to the little girl. "James Henry" she calls to the second black servant, how about you dancing too? "Oh no, Miss Virgie" he slurs slowly, "The body is willing but the feet just stays too close to the ground." 

    2. Tap dance duet, perf. by Temple and Robinson (to the harmonica accompaniment of James Henry) consisting of time steps, shim sham and Robinson's signature crossover steps. 

    3. Tap dance duet on a wooden sidewalk the street, perf. by Temple and Robinson. "Ya ya ya ya ya ya-ya" she sounds out he accompaniment: Robinson hums in his buzzer impersonation: skipping crossovers; back flaps close to the ground; the most rhythmic because of their vocalizations and stepping; nice breaks that bring them to a set of stairs: a mini stair dance with a break at the top and and finale down the stairs.</mods:abstract>
