<mods:abstract>Videotaped in performance on May 4, 1989. Choreography: Brenda Bufalino. Music, Carman Moore.
An American Tap Dance Orchestra masterwork.
Touch, Turn, Return (1989) Premiere: May 4, 1989
Called "an avant-garde musical abstraction" (Honi Coles)
Choreography Brenda Bufalino created in collaboration with composer Carman Moore. Performed: Brenda Bufalino and the American Tap Dance Orchestra: Neil Applebaum, Ira Bernstein, Barbara Duffy, Russell Halley; Lynne Jassem, Margaret Morrison, Jackie Raven, and Tony Waag, with the Sky Music Ensemble (Jim Baker, Kenneth Bichel, Gordon Gottlieb, LeRoy Jenkins, Eric Johnson, Dale Kleps, and Marianna Rosett.) The creation of the work was difficult due to the time constraints: Bufalino began creating the choreography before Moore composed the music. The twenty-minute work which touched on different musical modes opened indeterminately, segued into a shuffle rhythm, then into a bright flight in 2/4 time, then into an almost classical Spanish form, ending with a fugue where, says Bufalino, "Carman and I finally caught up with each other in the creative process."

Moore conducted the dancers and his Sky Music Orchestra from a podium onstage. The drama of the work lies not only in its musicality but also in the attention the dancers focus on the conductor. They had to sense each other almost telepathically, memorizing and executing patterns that did not link up in any obvious way to the music. Bufalino noted, "There was always a danger of a train wreck. Yet it never happened. The dancers danced as one."</mods:abstract>
