In "I Can't Help That Step" Astaire segues from witty lyrical patter into trading jive lines with musicians and develops the patter rhythm into a dance. Dancing with Goddard, Astaire comes up with a new step, the "Dig It"snapping the feet together and hopping into a hobbling position. In "Poor Mr. Chisholm/Hoe Down the Bayou" he builds a dance number out of the task of conducting a big band; blasts out a virtuosic tap dance that rides imaginatively but independently over the music.
