National Academy of Dance Awards established Social Event 1990-01-19 National Academy of Dance was created to bestow awards for excellence in dance and choreography for films, television began as an idea from dancer Wade Collings and Los Angeles television producer Gregory Willenborg who long dreamed of an awards show similar to the Grammys. The event broadcast on ABC, July 1990 at the newly opened San Diego convention Center. Presenter performers included Shirley MacLaine, Ann-Margaret, George Chakiris, Cyd Charisse, Ann Miller, Liza Minnelli, Mickey Mouse, the Nicholas Brothers, Juliet Prowse, Chita Rivera, Tony Stevens, Onna White, and Lester Wilson. Choreography awards given to Paula Abdul (for the best music video "Cold Hearted") and best television ensemble ("The Tracey Ullman Show"); to Kenny Ortega for film ("Dirty Dancing"); to Tommy Tune for stage ("Grand Hotel)"; and to Walter Painter for television. Hall of Fame inductions to Martha Graham and Sammy Davis, Jr. This however never happened again.
