Fifth annual St. Louis Tap Festival of classes, master tap workshops, and performances honoring and starring the Nicholas Brothers. Master tap classes were held all day August 1-3 at the Dimensions Dance Studio and COCA. Classes were held by the Nicholas Brothers, Dianne Walker, Sam Weber, Lane Alexander and Bruce Stegmann. Van Porter taught classes in rhythm flash tap. Cheryl Johnson of Seattle taught rhythm tap. Two new instructors were Gene Medler (director of the North Carolina Youth Tap Ensemble) and Barbara Duffy (formerly from NYC's ATDO). A Saturday night show and Sunday matinee were held for the first time. Yvette Glover was the master of ceremonies for both programs and the Carolbeth Trio provided live jazz music for the shows. "All That Tap V" highlighted both the festival instructors and up-and-coming acts from all over the US. Pieces were performed by Especially Tap Company (Chicago), Johnson & Peters (Seattle), The Swift Brothers (Chicago). Barbara Duffy, Sam Weber and Dianne Walker performed strong solo pieces in their respective styles. Lane Alexander performed an improv solo. The North Carolina Youth Tap Ensemble performed a piece by Josh Hilberman. The St Louis Hoofers Club (director Robert Reed) performed. The Nicholas Brothers were honored by film clips shown and performed a song and dance. Maceo Anderson and Peg Leg Bates performed flash tap acts. All performers came on stage and did a final shim-sham shimmy with the band to conclude.
