<mods:abstract>Initially a touring show and three-act play featuring pickaninny songs and buck dancing, the play surfaced in the 1890s and was a favorite among traveling theatrical troupes. In 1909 D.W. Griffith released a screen version with white actors in blackface. In 1928 Harlem's Lafayette Players arrived in Los Angeles with an elaborate touring company stage production. In 1935 Bill Robinson reprised the role that Stepin Fetchit played in 1927, which starred James Murray and Helene Costello. Perry in the 1927 version credited on screen as Stepin Fetchit and was cast as the stable hand Highpockets; the part of the house servant played by the beautiful dancer, producer, and Sebastian's Cotton Club star Carolynne Snowden.</mods:abstract>
