- Evolution of the Blues ran an unprecedented five years at the Broadway Theatre in San Francisco and another year in Los Angeles. Tap dancers Eddie Brown and Harold Nicholas appeared in the production.
Composer and singer Jon Hendricks first wrote, produced, staged and narrated Evolution of the Blues in September 1961, premiered at the Monterey Jazz Festival with Miriam Makeba, Odetta, Jimmy Witherspoon, Miss Hannah Dean, "Big" Miller and the Gildo Mahones Trio. Nine thousand people sat in 92 degrees in the shade for two hours without a break, and at the end rose as one and applauded a full twenty minutes.
