- Abstract
- Charles Martin Loeffler (1861-1935), the American composer who shared the position of concertmaster of the Boston Symphony Orchestra with Franz Kneisel for nearly twenty years, is best known for his songs, chamber works, and orchestral poems. Through the gift and bequest of his widow, Elsie Fay Loeffler, the Library received between 1935 and 1938 the composer's papers and the publication and performance rights for his compositions. The Loeffler Collection encompasses correspondence, photographs, music holographs, manuscripts for literary works, programs, and news clippings covering the period 1882 to 1935. The holographs, some of which were added by Loeffler's publisher, G. Schirmer, Inc., represent the major portion of his creative work. The music manuscripts are recorded in the catalog of the Music Division and have been reproduced on microfilm. The letters include correspondence with Pablo Casals, Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge, Gabriel Fauré, Isabella Stewart Gardner, lawrence Gilman, Philip Hale, Edward Burlingame Hill, Vincent d'Indy, Amy Lowell, Pierre Monteux, Henri Rabaud, Carlos Salzedo, John Singer Sargent, and Edgard Varèse.
