- Abstract
- German born Walter Damrosch (1862-1950) emigrated to the United States in 1871. He was the son of the early Metropolitan Opera conductor Leopold Damrosch and brother of eminent conductor Frank Damrosch. Walter Damrosch was an important figure in turn-of-the-century New York's musical life. He was an assistant conductor at the Metropolitan Opera (1885-1891), New York Oratorio Society music director (1885-1898) and music directory of the New York Symphony Society (1885-1903). He was also admired as a music educator and as a champion for American composers. He was appointed as the musical advisor to the new NBC radio network in 1927. As such he conducted a weekly series of music appreciation hours for schools and colleges from 1928 to 1942. As a composer he is now best remembered for operas such a The Scarlet Letter, Cyrano de Bergerac, and The Dove of Peace.
