- Abstract
- Arthur Rubinstein, an American pianist of Polish birth, was born January, 28, 1887, in Lodz, Poland, and died in Geneva, in 1982. In 1897 he was sent to study in Berlin under the supervision of violinist Joseph Joachim. There, Heinrich Barth became his principal piano teacher and Max Bruch taught him music theory. Early in his career he dispensed with regular piano instruction, except for a few periods of study with Ignaz Paderewski, and from thereon he relied upon his immense natural technical facility and gift for sight reading. Rubinstein made his début in Berlin in 1900 under the direction of Joachim. In 1906 he made his initial tour to the United States. In 1916 and 1917 he toured Spain and South America, beginning a life-long association with the music and composers of those regions. He made more than 200 recordings, including the complete works of Chopin and the complete Beethoven piano concertos.
