- Abstract
- William Batchelder Bradbury (1816-1868) was a noted hymn composer and music educator. As a youth, he attended Lowell Mason's Boston Academy of Music and sang in Mason's Boudoin Street Church Choir. After music study in Europe, Bradbury settled in New York City, where he taught and composed. In 1854 he formed the Bradbury piano company with his brother Edward. He is best known as the composer of the hymns "Jesus Loves Me," "He Leadeth Me," and "Just As I Am." The collection is rich in biographical material, including an unpublished biography titled "William B. Bradbury, His Life and Times," written by his granddaughter, Elma Marvin, and a biographical letter written in 1928 by Bradbury's son. Also important is an autograph sketchbook that Bradbury compiled while studying in Europe between 1847 and 1849. It contains short musical sketches by some of the leading musicians of the day, including Franz Abt, Niels Gade, Joseph Joachim, Jenny Lind, Albert Lorzing, Giacomo Meyerbeer, Ignaz Moscheles, Clara Schumann, Robert Schumann, Louis Spohr, Marianne Spohr, Richard Wagner, and others. Sketches by Felix Mendelssohn, Walter Damrosch, and Ignaz Paderewski were added later.
