- Abstract
- Belle G. Brown, an American soprano who enjoyed a promising but brief operatic career abroad at the turn of the 20th century, established relationships with many of the leading performers of Viennese musical society during her study with the distinguished Austrian soprano Pauline Lucca. Her collection of photographs, correspondence, and newspaper clippings document these friendships and associations as well as her vocal training with such renowned European singers as Lucca, Désirée Artôt de Pavilla, and Jean and Edouard de Reszke. Most significant are the letters from Lucca and Artôt de Pavilla to Brown, and those addressed to her parents which describe Brown's vocal progress and great promise. Also noteworthy is Brown's contract with the Deutsches Nationaltheater in Weimar, signed in 1893 by Hans von Bronsart.
