- Abstract
- Valeria Ladd was a dancer with the Noyes School of Rhythm during the 1930s, and accompanied its members to Greece in 1932 and 1934. The Noyes School of Rhythm was founded in 1912 by Florence Fleming Noyes. Noyes established her first studio in Carnegie Hall, New York City. Later, in 1921, she developed two summer camps in Connecticut, one for women and the other for families, men and children. Noyes died in 1928, but during her time with the School of Rhythm, she created a technique based on natural, fluid movement designed to emphasize rhythm through coordination and concentration. The Noyes School of Rhythm seeks to strengthen its dancers while avoiding "tense stress" and to instead instill relaxation into the movement. The school welcomes pupils of all ages and skill. The Valeria Ladd Collection is comprised mostly of photographs from her life as a dancer with the Noyes Dancers. The majority of these photographs are from trips to Greece throughout the 1930s with the Noyes Dancers. In addition, there are two portfolios with photographs of Ladd and Noyes dancer Marika Kotopouli, and the first issue of Denishawn Magazine published by Denishawn's directors, Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn. The most significant portion of the collection are the photographs, which show the Noyes Dancers emulating ancient Grecian characters and aesthetics. The photographs serve as a record of the Noyes School of Rhythm's focus on antiquity and its dance style during the 1930s.
