Color Guard, Grand Parade 1998 |
Neewollah (Independence)
This event held in Independence has grown from a
mere Halloween celebration to a nine-day festival. It features
three parades, one of which is two to three hours long. Community
theater musical productions such as
The Wizard of Oz, a
talent show for Queen Neelah, and the coronation of the queen are
constant features. Professional musical entertainment and games
such as the Neewollah medallion hunt add to the festivities. Held
continuously since 1958, it is a revival of the original Neewollah
begun in 1918 as an attractive alternative to the vandalism of
trick-or-treat. The project includes a videotape of highlights from
the 1994 Neewollah, an illustrated 18-page history, programs and
brochures, a poster, news clippings, and a number of souvenirs,
including buttons and a banner.
