Middlesex County Cultural and Heritage Commission's Folklife Program for New Jersey

This program was created in 1990 to document and preserve folk traditions found within the county's communities, which have a rich and varied cultural heritage. Newer immigrants from China, Latin America, India, Vietnam, and Korea, have joined more established ethnic enclaves of Hungarian, Russian, German, Italian, and Polish descent. The area was originally settled by the English, Dutch, Scottish and Irish. With this diversity in mind, the folklife program seeks to establish forums for cross-cultural exchange and understanding. A third goal is to establish an archive and library of folk art, including narrative and images resulting from fieldwork conducted by the Commission.
