Philip H. Reisman, Jr.: Prizewinning Writer for Film and Television and Expert in Indian Lore

A Larchmont, New York, resident for 50 years, the late Philip H. Reisman, Jr. was a film and television writer who made a remarkable contribution to the understanding of American history and heritage. He received five Academy Awards for documentaries, including the series This Is America. His thirty-two awards from film festivals worldwide include honors for The Real West, starring Gary Cooper, and End of the Trail with Walter Brennan. He also received two Wrangler awards from the National Cowboy Hall of Fame, an Edgar from the Mystery Writers of America, and the prestigious Peabody Award for Mark Twain.

His television honors included a documentary series for NBC, Project 20, and You Are There for CBS. He co-scripted The Adams Chronicles for the 1976 Bicentennial, a series that captivated the nation and rekindled interest in American history. The Westchester Historical Society honored him with the Golden Tomahawk Award for his work on The Adams Chronicles and for the last episode of the series Sandberg's Lincoln with Hal Holbrook.

Reisman served many terms as a trustee of the Larchmont Historical Society. His scholarship on Native American customs and artifacts, and his knowledge of local history, informed many society exhibits and publications. Among his many contributions have been several exhibits; a program on Native American customs and artifacts; participation in the "I Know a Village" series; and authoring the "A Slice of Larchmont Life," which was a series of Larchmont topics distributed during the Village Centennial. Reisman studied at Brown University and served in the U.S. Marine Corps before making his mark as a writer.

Documentation comprises a two film scripts by Reisman, two 1975 audio tapes of interviews with Reisman conducted for the Larchmont Public Library, and four color photo reproductions.
