The Glass Industry in Western Pennsylvania
This project documents the immense contributions of
the western Pennsylvania glass industry to American life and
culture. Glass has been made in Pittsburgh and the surrounding
region for more than 200 years. By 1900 there were more than 100
glass factories in the region employing thousands of workers and
manufacturing millions of pieces of glass each week, from window
glass and bottles to goblets for the White House tables of five
U.S. presidents. Glass is still made here today.
