Bells Across America
A project of the Asa Underwood chapter of the
Daughters of the American Revolution, Bells Across America marks
Constitution Week, commemorating the signing of the United States
Constitution on September 17, 1787. Bells are rung annually on
September 17 at the Replica of the Capitol of the First Republic of
Texas, in West Columbia. The event is designed to cause citizens to
pause to reflect on the devotion of the men who wrote our
Constitution and the liberties we enjoy as a result. It serves to
remind us of our commitment to the Constitution and our
responsibilities as United States citizens. The Brazoria County
Militia, first formed in the early days of the Texas republic, add
color to the event, and students from the West Columbia school
system also take part in the activities. The project documentation
includes a written report, a copy of the Constitution Week
Proclamation of Brazoria County, a flyer announcing the event, and
newspaper clippings.
