Saturday, September 9, 1944

Dear Florence

Despite your suggestion that something other than the prosaic salutation might be used, I continue as above, possibly from force of habit. You no doubt have been wondering at the dearth of letters. I realize that for the past three weeks I have’nt written, but that has been entirely due to the fact that we were running so fast that the just was’nt the time though I did write to Barbara last week. Time moves so fast that I can hardly realize that I have been overseas for almost seven months and more than three months in France.

If you have followed the progress of the war in France, you can vizualize that I have been in almost every square mile of the occupied territory. I have certainly seen plenty of it, and with mixed feelings. Parts of it are really very
