Wallace E. Rand enlisted in the Army in July 1917, telling his mother that he thought he might as well join up before he got drafted. Serving with the 14th Engineers, he worked on light railway lines, hauling artillery ammunition, and while his letters generally spare his mother the details of the front lines, after a temporary transfer to the rear he tells her, “It seems funny not to hear the guns booming, it is so quiet.” By October 1918, Rand was safely stationed far from the front lines, but sadly, he was not out of danger. He was hospitalized with influenza and died just days before the war ended.
