The veteran was a bombardier in a B-24 Liberator bomber based in Manduria, Italy. He was shot down in a raid over Ploesti, Romania and held in a Romanian prisoner of war (POW) camp for several months before being released. He received a Purple Heart after being injured in an airplane accident in Italy.
