A native of Indiana, Ewing Harry Miller was pursuing a promising career in architecture when World War I interrupted his plans. Commissioned as a First Lieutenant in late November 1917, he departed for France in March 1918, where he served first with the 481st Aero Construction Squadron and later trained as an aerial observer (an aircrew member in charge of reconnaissance). Though Miller took his military responsibilities seriously, it is clear from his letters that his fascination with architecture never waned throughout his time in France, and after the Armistice he successfully petitioned to return to the States to join the family architecture firm. Sadly, Miller's career was cut short when he died of appendicitis just a few years after his return home.
