30 July ‘66

Hi Billy,

Received your letter tonight. First about that attack on our division. It was a mortar attack and they hit us two times once at about seven thirty. It lasted for about two hours. They hit from three different sides of the base camp. We have sand bag bunkers in our company and there pretty good. None of the rounds landed near our company. Most of the guys that got hurt where these guys that never go out to the field. They stay in base camp and think that there isn’t a war going on. So they diddn’t[sic] [unclear] bunkers and had no place to go when the mortaring started. We were also hit at about 5:00 oclock in the morning. I was laying in my cot. I had woke up about ten minutes before. I could hear the rounds comming[sic] in. We went into the bunkers again
