<p><hi rend="smallcaps">Alternative</hi> Amendments proposed to the Statute promulgated Nov. 20.</p>

<p><hi rend="bold">I. That in the first sentence the words &ldquo;qui nunc est&rdquo; be inserted after the word &ldquo;Professoris.&rdquo;</hi></p>

<p>The aim of this Amendment is to have a distinct issue on which to vote.</p>

<p>If adopted it will satisfy those who object to surrendering the future patronage of the Chair.</p>

<p>Those who vote on Theological grounds no Statute can satisfy which recognises the present Professor.</p>

<p><hi rend="bold">II. That a Statute be framed creating an independent Professorship of Greek.</hi></p>

<p><hi rend="bold">That the Professor shall be appointed by a Board similar in constitution to that which appoints the
Professor of Latin: but that the Corpus element be omitted and the Professor of Latin be substituted for the Regius Professor of Greek.</hi></p>

<p><hi rend="bold">That all the conditions imposed by the promulgated Statute be retained except No. 7, which shall either be omitted, or altered by inserting after the word &ldquo;Professione&rdquo; the words &ldquo;nisi in eadem materia.&rdquo;</hi></p>

<p>This alternative preserves to the University the Election of the Professor, while it leaves the present Regius Professor eligible.</p>

<p>It adopts a mode of Election already sanctioned in a parallel case.</p>

<p>No. I. meets the present peculiar circumstances. Suppose that carried, No. II. might be a permanent addition to the Statute-Book.</p>
